The Eijerkamp-Janssen’s – The Pigeons for the Present and the Future

For many years Hans Eijerkamp was building up his own family of racing pigeons, which were based on the famous bloodlines of the Janssen Brothers of Arendonk in Belgium. Many times Hans made the trip to those little men of Schoolstraat 6, to obtain the best from their breeding loft, which when blended with the best Dutch performing Janssens, formed the modern all-round elite racing machines of today.

Now-over 35 years later-Hans Eijerkamp is the owner of the best Janssens from the brothers in Arendonk, Janssens through Bertus Camphuis and the Janssens of Albert van der Flaes, pure as well as crossed into one. Exactly as Hans had in mind. It is not necessary that we talk about the three different families, but all three combined into one created the Eijerkamp-Janssen family.

In 1964 Hans Eijerkamp bought 5 pure Janssen birds from the source in Arendonk. At that time another fantastic purchase was made at Mr De Smale of Elst. In the sixties this loft was very well known for its pure Janssen birds. It was here that Hans bought the B 64-6639792 which later on became the legendary “Oude Bange of ’64”, a son of the famous “Bange of ‘51”. Way back then Piet de Weerd wrote in one of his well-known pigeon books, that this “Bange of ‘64” was a real ‘cracker’. A pigeon with a very high value, a statement that proved to be very correct, as the descendants of the “Bange of ’64” form the base of the famous Janssen pigeons at the Eijerkamp lofts. Breeders such as “Blauwe Kweekwonder”, “Olympiade Bange of ‘67”, and “Jonge Bange” (winner of 7 first prizes) have left their marks. In 1973 Hans purchased two fantastic hens at the Janssen Bros.. The “092” and the “093” which are both children from the legendary “Oude Merckx of ‘67”.

Famous 05 x Bange 780

In 1974 the “Oude Bange of ‘64” was mated to the “Merckx hen 092”. From this pair descends the “Bange 780 hen” (NL 74 1161780). This hen is probably one of the best breeding hens ever. Mated to different cock birds this hen produced many first prize winning birds, but above all the mating with the “Famous 05” (NL 77 476105) turned out to be the most successful couple. The “Famous 05” was in 1981 the best middle distance bird of the Netherlands. In 1985 this pair produced two sisters, the “Blauwe 141” and the “Goede 142”. These birds turned out to be the star-breeding hens of the Eijerkamp-Janssen family and became the start of the enormous successes for the racing loft of Mrs Eijerkamp in the nineties. The “Blauwe 141” is dam of the NL 91 1560085 “Flits” when she was mated to a Van Loon cock bird. “Flits” won seven first prizes and in 1995 at the Olympiad in Utrecht, “Flits” was crowned as the world’s 2nd best short distance bird (100-400 km). The “Goede 142” was responsible for another Olympiad participant in the short distance class. Her son, the NL 93 5334396 the “Young Generaal” in 1997 represented the Dutch Olympic team in Bazel in Switzerland with five first prizes against 2,000 – 7000 birds in competition. His full brother “Jumbo” won a total of 41 prizes. His best results were 1st Houdeng 3,288 birds, 1st Heverlee 2,331 birds, 1st Houdeng 3,600 birds. The brothers are direct sons of the world famous “Generaal” NL 85-1809461 from Smeulders Bros.. If you study the pedigrees of the Eijerkamp-Janssen birds thoroughly you can discover the breeding system.

For example, the grandam of the “Generaal” is also the grandam of the “Famous 05”. They both descend from the blood of the late Wout Smeulders, his “Slate 626”. This hen in turn is a granddaughter of the “Bange of 51”, which makes the circle complete.

All over the world the progeny of this wonderful cock, the “Famous 05” have proved to be very successful. The many letters of thanks are received daily at the Ponderosa & Greenfield studs, confirm this. With the descendants of this “05” cock bird, Hans Eijerkamp has built up a real gold mine. Two invaluable purchases were made from Cees Suykerbuyk of Eefde. In 1984 the NL 83-1774007 named “James Bond”,

who was the best national middle distance bird of the Netherlands, moved to Brummen. His dam was a full sister of the “Famous 05” and in the pedigree of his sire you find the blood of the “Bange of ‘51”!!

Also “Glamourboy, NL 87-1473403 from Cees Suykerbuyk moved to the breeding lofts of the Eijerkamp family. “Glamourboy” won in 1992 the 1st prize national Etampes against 13,842 birds and a total of seven first prizes. In the pedigree of this super performer you will see that both his grandsires are full brothers to the “Famous 05.”

As you can see the Eijerkamp-Janssen family is based on well considered pairings and practically all built up with blood of the legendary “Bange of 51”.

The influence of the Verbarts

In this story we should certainly not forget the influence of the “Verbart 46” legacy, which also played an important part in the success story of the Eijerkamp-Janssen birds. These pigeons mainly were acquired from the partnership Den Haan of Honselersdijk and Dick Leeuwerke of Klaaswaal. The legendary ‘46’ was a super-racer (with 15 first prizes) and top breeder at the loft of the late Piet Verbart. The cock was a son of the world famous De Klak pair ‘Vechter x Witpenneke’, pure Janssens. In 1990 Hans Eijerkamp & Sons bought two top performing cock birds from Bertus Camphuis. These cracks descend from the ‘Verbart 46’ cock. The NL 88-2854505 better known as the “Wonderboy 05” and his full brother NL 88-2854506 “Wonderboy 06” were crowned as 2nd and 4th Ace-pigeons of the Netherlands in 1990.

In the pedigree of the Wonderboys we find the name of the “Famous 05”, as well as the old lines of the Wout Smeulders birds and a touch of the Van der Flaes bloodlines, from the famous “Vos den Bijter” and the “Schone Vos”. In 1997 Hans Eijerkamp & Sons acted very quickly when Bertus Camphuis won the biggest young bird race in the world, the Dutch National young bird Derby from Orleans. The bird that won the race, NL 97-5775961 was “Golden Boy” against a total of 10,940 birds. “Golden Boy” fits perfectly in the Eijerkamp-Janssen family. His sire was bred from two grand children of the ‘Verbart 46’ and his dam descends from the old Janssen lines with a touch of Van Loon blood. The NL 96-8016480 “Loverboy” also has the golden ‘46’ blood in his veins. In 1996 this cock bird was proclaimed as best young bird of the world in the Versele-Laga competition (winning ten prizes). His sire is a Verbart pigeon and his grandsire on his mother’s side is the “Glamourboy”. Again proof of the quality of the Eijerkamp-Janssen strain.

The Van der Flaes bloodlines have had an important role in the structure of the Eijerkamp-Janssen stock. This was explained previously in this article in the pedigrees of the ‘Wonderboys’, but you can find this influence also clearly in the pedigree of “Ronaldo”. This Red Fox Van der Flaes won six first prizes, and descends on his Sires side from famous names as “Oude Vos”, and “Vos de Poot”. In the pedigree on his dam’s side you will find the name of the legendary “Merckx of ‘67”. Also the “Testarossa” has a big influence in the Eijerkamp-Janssen stock of today. This red fox, with big black splashes throughout his feathering, Van der Flaes cock bird won 23 prizes out of 24 races, including 6 first prizes at Federation and Combine level. His grand parents are the well known pigeons “Kapotte Kop”, and son of “Vos den Poot”, and daughter of the “Goede 22’. These birds have put the name of Albert van der Flaes from Ravels in Belgium on all the lips in the pigeon world.

To create the best short/middle distance racers in the future, all combined into one from all these superb racers was the task Hans Eijerkamp had mapped out for himself. Hans and his sons created an unlikely strong unity of pigeons so it did not take long to get the highest possible standard that they have set for themselves. In 1997 the NL 93-5334442 “Silvester” (grandson of “Wonderboy 05” and “James Bond”), won 32 prizes in 1997 & 1998 was crowned best national short distance Ace-pigeon of the Netherlands. “Silvester” won a.o. 1st St. Ghislain against 4,593 birds and 1st Minderhout against 1,546 birds. And “Garfield” NL 97-5774804 (bred from a grand son of “Wonderboy 05”) was proclaimed in 1997 to be ‘world champion youngbird’ in the strong and well known Versele Laga competition. This chequer cock scored 3 firsts; 1st Lommel (4,964 birds), 1st Chimay (3,784 birds), 1st Etampes (1,136 birds).

Again direct Janssen Arendonk birds moved to the Greenfield Stud

For over 30 years Hans Eijerkamp has had a very close friendship with the Janssen Brothers and over the years he bought many direct pigeons at the source. To re-enforce his number of pure Janssen’s, Hans went in 1996 and 1998 to Louis Janssen, the last surviving member of the Janssen Brothers, to purchase respectively 3 and 4 youngsters from their very best bloodlines. Hans Eijerkamp and Sons always make sure that they stay in touch with all the famous lines of this phenomenal family of speed racers.
